University of Science and Technology of Hanoi - USTH (Vietnam France University) welcomed Prof. Eric Petit from University of Peris Est Créteil, France to teach Medical Science and Technology students "Introduction to Image Processing" from 24th October to 14th November 2017.

Prof. Eric Petit received his Ph.D. Degree in Bio Medical Engineering from UPEC in 1985. His area of interest is image analysis and their applications to cardiac imagery. Since 1993 he has been a Professor and the head of the Signal and Image team. Since 1996, he is responsible for the MSc program on Signals and Images in Medicine Science and Technology (MST) students with the general principles of image processing. The course content covers the basic knowledge of digital images such as image sampling and quantization, colour, point operations, segmentatioon, morphological filters, linear image filtering and correlation, edges and contours, morphological filters. Under the guidance of Prof. Eric Petit, MST students know how to apply these materials by implementing and investigating image processing algorithms in Matlab, a high performance interactive software package for scientific and engineering computation.

MATLAB integrates numerical analysis, matrix computation, signal processing and graphics in an easy-to-use environment where problems and solutions are expressed just as they are written mathematically. Image Processing Toolbox in Matlab provides users a comprehensive set of reference-standard algorithms and workflow apps for image processing, analysis, visualization, and algorithm development. Users can perform image segmentation, image enhancement, noise reduction, geometric transformations, image registration, and 3D image processing.

After completing this course, MST students are expected to understand biomedical images which assist doctors in understanding the nature of human biological systems.

Besides, Prof. Eric had presented some information related to the Master program in Signaux et Images en Médecine at UPEC to Prof. Patrick Boiron - Rector of USTH and other lecturers of MST in order to discuss potentials for future collaborations. UPEC is a public research university which was inaugurated in 1970. It is a multidisciplinary centre based principally in Créteil. UPEC has about 32,000 students enrolled in seven departments and seven institutes.

In addition, with the aim of establishing linkage between Vietnamese and French scientists, Prof. Eric Petit delivered a talk, namely "Medical Image Processing Applied to Aided Diagnosis and Therapeutics" to doctors at the National Heart Institute, Bach Mai General Hospital. The talk was attended on USTH side by Prof. Dr. Le Tran Binh, Mentor of the MST program, Dr. Dao Thanh Duong, Director of the Undergraduate School, lecturers in the MST program and on National Heart Institute side by PhD. M.D. Nguyen Thi Thu Hoai, Vice-Director, along with other doctors of National Heart Institute.
