Entrepreneurship & Innovation "Start-up: Let it be?"

On 23rd November 2017 University of Science and Technology of Hanoi - USTH (Vietnam France University) organized an event, namely Entrepreneurship & Innovation:"Start-up: Let it be?". 

With the aim of increasing awareness and providing the audiences with basic knowledge on entrepreneurship and innovation, "Start-up: Let it be?" has the attendance of special speakers who have many years of experience on the field of entrepreneurship and innovation. They are: Mr. Nguyen Trung Dung - Chairman of BK Holdings Group, Mr. Nguyen Trung Hieu - Chairman of Airman, Mr. Vu Duc Giang - Trade Advisor, Investment, Embassy of Haiti cum. Vice - President of French Alumni Vietnam and French Alumni Vietnam Startup Network and Ms. Do Van Nguyet - Co-Founder and Director of Live and Learn for Environment and Community.

Ms. Do Van Nguyet shared her stories of ideas for start-up from all over the world and stated that challenge will bring potential chance. Through some case studies of Unilever or herbal toothpaste made by Agriculture students, Ms. Nguyet advised young individuals who are struggle to find an idea for their start-up to open their hear, look around and be willing to help people.

Her advise was supported by the following story told by Cao Anh Quan - An alumnnus of MSc Information Technology and Communication, Co-founder of KEE Education (or commonly known as ColorME). Quan also is the representative of USTH Alumni at the event. He said in 2015 graphic design is relatively new and many students want to learn it. However, graphic design course at that time was very expensive. Thus Quan and some friends decided to open a design course for students. When the number of students reached 100, he and his friends established KEE Education.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Hieu - Chairman of Airman pointed out that apart from lack of ideas, another obstacle young people face is the lack of human resource. New ideas are less likely to be supported by others. Mr. Hieu expressed his belief in the crucial role of university because it acts like a bridge connecting students and corporations.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Hieu talked about difficulties his start-up encountered

In line with Mr. Nguyen Trung Hieu, Mr. Vu Duc Giang - Trade advisor, Investment, Embassy of Haiti cum. Vice-President of French Alumni Vietnam cum. Vice-President of French Alumni Vietnam Startup Network said the two alumni groups he is working at is trying to create a community for students to support each other.

Regarding a currently debateable issue is whether the bloom of startup brings any risks, Mr. Nguyen Trung Dung - BK Holdings Group said because startup is a trend which starts abroad, Vietnam economy is very new to it. People define startup in different ways. Some are not accurate. For example, Mr. Dung has met many students who sold handmade birthday card and thought they were doing startup. According to Mr. Dung, this is a false understanding. However, a good news is recently the authority has redefined startup. 2016 was chosen to be a year for entrepreneurship and innovation in Vietnam.

Assoc. Prof. Ngo Duc Thanh - Vice Rector of USTH illustrasted that many students now are priotizing opening their startup over improving their academic knowledge. Nonetheless, students should understand that in order to have a foundation for startup, they need to have a solid understanding of fundamental knowledge taught at university. Assoc. Prof. Ngo Duc Thanh advised students to be patient until they are ready.

Apart from sharing experiences on entrepreneurship and innovation as well as discuss about the role of university, "Start-up: Let it be?" also is an opportunity for USTH to introduce about USTH Fablab. According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Van Thanh - Project Manager of USTH Fablab, this is an open space which provides equipments and technologies needed to promote innovativeness. USTH Fablab has recently sponsored by Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF). This sponsorship will be spent on purchasing necessary equipments for Fablab. USTH Fablab is expected to open for public since March 2018. Not only USTH students but also students from other university all are welcomed to join USTH Fablab.
