Admission interview is part of an admission process used widely at many worldwide universities. Admission interview is compulsory in the field of natural science and technology.

In Vietnam there is a common scenario in which many high school students make their university choice solely based on parental advices without taking into account their ability and passion. This leads to a consequence that many fresh graduates get a job which is irrelevant to their previous academic background or they decide to change their major in the middle of studying.

USTH wants to give an opportunity to students who have a strong passion and truly want to pursue the field of science and technology. We design the admission interview in order to directly listen to the student’s voice.

The USTH admission interviewed is normally conducted in English. However, many students who have an intention to apply to USTH are afraid of their limited English.

Understanding the feeling of applicants, from the academic year 2018-2019, USTH will implement a one-year English preparatory programme and allow applicants to choose languages to interview for those who are not confident with their English level.  Accordingly, these candidates can choose Vietnamese as their interview language and attend the one-year English preparatory programme, including 700 hours basic and scientific English to improve their foreign language skill.

Therfore, students who do not have a good level of English proficiency but can show their strong academic knowledge and clear study goals will be accepted. We believe when students study in a high quality learning environment with the support from lecturers who have lots of experience in teaching and research, their English capability and scientific knowledge will be improved.

The interview lasts about 20 - 30 minutes. A standard interview includes 4 parts:

Part 1: Introduction

Candidate briefly introduce himself and his academic achievements.

Part 2: Open discussion with the Jury

The Jury discusses with candidate the reasons for choosing USTH, the choice of speciality, study goals and career orientation

Part 3: Assess knowledge on Natural Science subjects: Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science and Geography

Candidate will pick a question and have 1 - 2 minutes to prepare the answer.

Part 4: The Jury  evaluate performance of the candidate and make decision

The Panel will evaluate the performance and make decision regarding the cadidate’s application at the end of the interview. The letter to those who pass the interv comes in three forms:

Accepted and received scholarship

Candidates who perform well in the interview and had good academic records at high school will have opportunity to receive scholarship which is equivalent to 100%, 75%, 25% of the first year ’s tuition fee.

Accepted with a condition

Candidates who do not have good English skills but have proved a strong knowledge and clear study goals will be given the opportunity to join the university. These candidates will be required to attend an English preparation course before the semester officially starts.

1. Before the interview

Check the date of interview on USTH website: www.usth.edu.vn

Know what to expect: Watch the video of an interview trial at USTH and ask for experiences from USTH alumnus. Don’t forget to confirm the time and venue of the interview.

Be ready: Make a list of potential questions which you think the Jury may ask, especially questions related to your  application dossier as well as choice of study.

Be your own hero: Revise knowledge of five Natural Science subjects (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science). Which subject draw more of your attention ?

Practice, practice and practice: Remember what you have written in your application dossier, select the most important attributes and write them down. Practise in front of a mirror or play a real interview with your family and friends. You can choose to practice with a normal friend instead of a close one in order to see how you would act in front of a group of strangers.

But don’t overdo it: Don’t try to memorise your answers. USTH appreciates differences.

Finally, remember to have a good sleep and don’t miss your breakfast

*Note: Because the interview is taken in English, you should prepare all your answers in English.

2. During the interview

Dress to impress: You don’t have to wear uniform but too loose or too tight clothes along with exam pressure may make you uncomfortable.

Arrive early: Arrive 10 - 15 minutes earlier than your appointment. Remember to inform the Admission Department if you come late or have to postpone your appointment.

Body language: Sit straight, keep eye contact with the Jury

Be yourself: There is no right or wrong answer. The Jury  will look at the way you resonate your answers using your logics and knowledge. Be honest, don’t be exaggerated or humble.

Ask the Jury to repeat the questions if you haven’t fully understood.

3. After the interview

At the end of the interview, you will have a chance to ask the Jury  some questions. This is a chance for you to clarify your concerns.

Don’t worry if you don’t have any questions.

Google on USTH before coming to the interview to ensure that the answers to your questions are  not easily found on USTH website.

The Jury  will make decision regarding your admission acceptance at the end of the interview.
