Development History

Over the past 45 years (1973-2018), Vietnam and the French Republic have established and continuously showed determination in developing a comprehensive diplomatic and strategic partnership. France is the European partner which provides the largest Official Development Assistance (ODA) for Vietnam, and is one of Vietnam's most important strategic partners in many sectors, especially in the field of science and technology.

Within the context of globalization as a dominant trend over the world, the Vietnamese Government has determined that Science and Technology play a crucial role in the country's socio-economic development, which contribute to bring Vietnam in top three economies with fastest growth in Asia. Accordingly, developing a high quality labor force for the scientific field is considered as the a leading national policy, especially when the 4.0 Industrial Revolution promises to bring many opportunities but also significant challenges for Vietnam.

In this context, USTH was established with the great mission of training the elite generations of scientist for the sake of research activities and technology transfer in Vietnam. In June 2008,  Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan - Vietnam Vice President cum. Minister for Education and Training, and Ms. Valérie Pécresse - French Minister for Higher Education and Research, have decided to choose France as the foreign strategic partner of USTH.

On 9th December 2009, based on the Decision No. 2067 of Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, USTH was officially established. The university is built with loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and a strong support from the two governments, as well as the Consortium of more than 40 French universities and research institutions.
