1. Overview:
USTH offers two official English courses for bachelor degree and one course for master degree. These courses are taught only in the first year of both bachelor and master programs with the overview as below:

a. Autumn B1 – M1 course
The course aims to develop first year students’ English academic language proficiency with a strong focus on the four skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. At the end of the course, students are expected to achieve at least 5.5 of IELTS overall band score with no sub-band below 5.0.
Additionally, the program is designed to reinforce students’ wide range of vocabulary on scientific topics such as earth science or human body studies. It provides students with background knowledge of the scientific fields through the course materials and encourages students to read more extensively to enhance their knowledge of the fields.
To cater for the need of comprehending in-class lectures, a course in listening and note taking is provided. In this course students are equipped with essential techniques to take notes and make effective use of notes for lesson revision.
b. Spring B1 course
Presentation skill is also a focus of the program to help students practice delivering speech before a crowd confidently. All presentations are of scientific topics of their interest.
Finally, the skills to write academic papers such as paraphrasing, summarizing, synthesizing and referencing to avoid plagiarism are introduced in the Intensive Academic Writing Module.

3. Regulation and form:

EXEMPTION POLICY FOR M1/B1 AUTUMN ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE

* The following cases shall be eligible for exemption from basic and IELTS subjects:
1/ Holding a valid academic IELTS certificate of 5.5 overall or higher (no individual band score below 5.0);
2/ Holding a valid TOEFL iBT certificate of 70 total or higher;
3/ Holding a valid TOEFL PBT of 500 total or higher.
The average results of exempted subjects will be converted from the achieved IELTS/TOEFL scores.
These students are still required to complete Listening & note-taking subject and English for science subject.

* Students those are citizens of a country where English is the official language shall be eligible for exemption from all English language subjects. However:
1/ Master students are required to take the final IELTS tests for average results in academic transcript.
2/ Bachelor students are required to take final tests of Listening & note-taking, English for science and IELTs for average results of each subject.

* The following cases shall be considered to be eligible for exemption on a case-by-case basis:
1/ Holding a recognized certificate of English language proficiency that is not mentioned in above;
2/ Having transcript showing at least one year of enrollment as a full-time student at a college or university.
3/ Completing at least one academic year at an institution where English is the official teaching language.

To be granted exemption, students are required to submit the followings to Foreign Languages department:

EXEMPTION POLICY FOR B3 ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE

The following cases shall be eligible for exemption from IELTS subjects:
1/ Holding a valid academic IELTS certificate of 6.0 overall or higher (no individual band score below 5.0);
2/ Holding a valid TOEFL iBT certificate of 90 total or higher;
3/ Holding a valid TOEFL PBT of 550 total or higher.
The average results of exempted subjects will be converted from the achieved IELTS/TOEFL scores.
These students are still required to complete English Written Correspondence.
To be granted exemption, students are required to submit the followings to Foreign Languages department:
