  1. Introduction

The impressive development of modern science and technology is creating incisive change in our society. Vietnamese medical with properly invested modern equipment í gradually catching up to international level. However, for the modern medical equipment can operate properly, we need to have a group of high lever trained technician and engineer with high responsibility and influence in English. According to recently research, in more than 100 modern hospitals in Vietnam, for the current years, the well trained technical staffs needed is about 2000 to 3000 per year, but education programs in medical technology graduate approximately 100 students per year. Moreover, in traditional medical schools medical technology program is combined with nursing and the training is running at the technician levels. In reality, at the local hospital, the rate of technical staff in charge of the medical equipment is very low: only 6% are engineers, 35% are technicians or technical workers, and 59% are part-time officers. Therefore human resource demand in this area is extremely urgent, should be particularly concerned.

  1. Aims of training

The establishment of the Medical Science and Technology Program at USTH will contribute to fill this gap in human resource demand in this term. The program will provide scientific knowledge and practical skills in relevant fundamental sciences and technologies in order to help students adapt to operating many new high-tech medical instruments and implement procedures of modern diagnosis and analysis. After three year at USTH, students could have a 4 – 6 months internship at modern hospitals all-over Viet Nam that will be very helpful for their future career.

  1. Possibilities for job and higher study

The MST students after graduated have opportunity to become engineer or technical staff at hospital, Medical laboratory technologist, consultants at Medical technology and equipment companies or scientific officers at any NGO’s (non-governmental organizations) and/or Governmental organizations in medical field. Moreover, this bachelor’s degree will entitle you to enroll the “Master and Doctorate in Medical Science and Technology” at USTH or the other equivalent educational institutions.

  1. Tentative core curriculum for 3-years bachelor program

The Department of Medical Science and Technology offers undergraduates two options:

  • Clinical Laboratory Technologies
  • Medical Instrumental Technologies

Each option leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Science and Technology. All options require that a student complete a “core curriculum”, consisting of courses in medical science and technology. In addition, each option features a group of additional/optional courses that provide greater specificity in the student’s chosen area.

4.1. First year

The academic program equips the principles and concepts in the mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and engineering sciences as other departments. Along with the courses in foreign languages and management sciences, fundamental courses will be taught in the first semester:

  • Calculus,
  • Linear & bilinear algebra
  • Mechanics,
  • Introduction to Informatics
  • General chemistry,
  • Cellular Biology,
  • Electromagnetism.

In the second semester, they will continue studying fundamental courses with:

  • Biochemistry,
  • Introduction to informatics 2
  • Calculus 2,
  • Organic Chemistry,
  • General Chemistry 2
  • Practical Chemistry
  • Genetics,
  • Thermodynamics,
  • Optics.

 4.2. Second year

Students will be provided the scientific aspects of medical technology.

– The course of the 3th semester will give the basic knowledge of medical science, such as:

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Human Genetics
  • Introduction to Medical Ethics…

They will also study the principles and fundamentals of medical instruments and techniques such as:

  • Introduction to Medical Physics (MRI+Sonography+Radiography +Tomography…),
  • Principles of Medical Electronic and Medical Instruments,
  • Principle & Practical of Clinical Diagnostics (Biochemical, Microbiological, Image, Practical training ) …

–  In the 4th semester, they will study medical science in depth with:

  • Medical Radiation Physic and Safety,
  • General and Molecular Pathology,
  • General and Molecular Immunology,
  • Principal of Diagnostic Kits,
  • Principal of Image Processing
  • Sonography Principles and Instruments…

4.3. Third year

–  In the 5th semester, students could choose their future career in two different tracks:

  • Clinical Laboratory Technologies allows students to further develop, refine their knowledge, understanding as well as practical skills at the more advanced level, learn how to apply their skills in clinics about molecular diagnostics, microbiology, chemical pathology, cytopathology… Moreover, students must study the following courses:
  • Molecular Markers for Diagnostics
  • Cancer Biology and Diagnostics
  • Parasitology & Mycology
  • Hematology
  • Virology
  • Medical Instrumental Technologies, in another way, strongly focus on medical imaging and techniques. Students must refine their knowledge and practical skills in medical imaging science as well as apply to clinical practices by these following courses :
  • Introduction to Pattern Recognition
  • Evidence-Based Image Analysis
  • Computed Tomography Imaging
  • X-ray Imaging
  • Ultrasound Imaging
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging

– In the 6th semester, the department usually gives student an opportunity to participate in medical projects. After that, they must follow the clinical internship in hospital centers in at least 6 months. The department also collaborates with many partners in medical fields that provides scholarships and many career opportunities for our students. In particular, students who desire to find a good job immediately after graduation must elongate their intership from 3 to 6 months in the extra-semester in order to develop their practical skills in hospitals or medical centers.

The career potential for graduates of MST program is very promising. Graduates would be ideal candidates for jobs in most organizations where a major emphasis is medical field such as public hospitals, medical centers, private clinics, … etc. In addition, graduates who advance in further study are able to continue Master or Ph.D programs.
